When the Mission Starts Replacing the Master
Introduction: The Order We Keep Getting Wrong
There’s a tension a lot of us don’t talk about enough.
Not between sin and righteousness…
but between assignment and intimacy.
Because if we’re honest, it’s easy to start chasing what we’re called to do… and slowly drift from the One who called us.
And Jesus didn’t leave this unclear. He gave us the order straight:
Matthew 6:33 (CSB)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”
That’s the order.
Not seek the results first.
Not seek the platform first.
Not even seek the assignment first.
Seek Him first.
But if I’m honest, my default ain’t always that.
Sometimes I’m chasing the next result instead of the deeper calling.
Sometimes I get locked into the assignment and trying to fulfill the mission… and I end up putting the mission before God.
And that’s not good.
1. You Can Be Busy for God and Still Be Out of Order
I remember being the Sunday School teacher… then the Sunday School superintendent… stepping in to minister the Word when I was called to the pulpit.
From the outside, it looked like I was doing everything right.
But inside?
Running on fumes.
Because I was doing things for God… without spending real time with God.
And Matthew 6:33 checks that real quick.
Because it doesn’t say:
“Serve first.”
“Work first.”
“Build first.”
It says seek first.
Which means if seeking Him isn’t first… something is out of order, no matter how good it looks.
2. Chasing the Gift More Than the Giver Will Drain You
I had to face this too.
I got caught up chasing the gift more than the One who gave me the gift.
The ability.
The calling.
The responsibility.
All of that started taking center stage.
And slowly, God moved from being the source… to just being the One I was working for.
That shift is dangerous.
Because now you’re trying to sustain something that was never meant to be sustained without Him.
And that’s where the burnout comes from.
3. Putting the Mission Before God Leads to Collision
What I learned the hard way is this:
Trying to do a good thing for the Source… while neglecting time with the Source…
That’s a head-on collision.
It doesn’t work out for your good.
You might keep moving for a while.
You might even see some results.
But eventually:
your strength runs low
your clarity gets cloudy
your spirit feels dry
Because the order is off.
Solution: Put God Back in First Place—For Real
Before you create… seek.
Before you serve… seek.
Before you move… seek.
Not as a routine.
Not as a checkbox.
But real time.
Real connection.
Real dependence.
Because the mission was never meant to replace God.
It was supposed to flow from Him.
Conclusion: Back to the Standard

Not second.
Not after the work is done.
Not when you feel like it.
