The Deity of Jesus (Part 1) by A.W. Hall:
Bible Verse:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1 (Lexham English Bible Translation)
Lesson:
This verse from the Gospel of John is incredibly profound and foundational to the Christian understanding of Jesus Christ. It reveals several key truths about Jesus, also known as “the Word.”
1. Jesus and the Beginning:
The phrase “In the beginning” takes us back to the very start of everything. While our own existence and the universe had a beginning, Jesus did not. He was already present. This verse tells us that Jesus is not a created being but has always existed. He is eternal, beyond the constraints of time and space.
2. Jesus with God:
The statement “the Word was with God” highlights the relationship between Jesus and God the Father. It shows a distinct yet intimate connection, indicating that while Jesus is God, He is also a distinct person within the Trinity. This underscores the mystery and beauty of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity—one God in three persons.
3. Jesus is God:
Finally, the verse declares that “the Word was God.” This is a clear affirmation of Jesus’ divine nature. He is not merely a prophet, teacher, or enlightened man; He is God Himself. This verse is a cornerstone for the doctrine of the deity of Christ, affirming His equality with the Father.
This passage provides compelling evidence that Jesus is not only the Son of God but is God Himself. His eternal nature and divine status mean that He existed before the world was created. This is a powerful truth that not only affirms His deity but also His role in the creation and sustenance of the universe.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Word. We are grateful for the truths You have shared with us, showing us who You really are. Help us to comprehend and trust in Your divine nature as we encounter You through the scriptures.
Amen.
