✍🏾 Writer’s Perspective
“Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is pray for them and let God do for them what you can’t.”
That line hit me like a ton of bricks, because man—if you’ve ever tried to walk with someone new in their faith, you know how easy it is to feel like you’ve got to carry them on your back. I was talking to a friend recently about discipling a new believer, and I found myself saying, “Sometimes you just gotta let go and let God do His thing before you get dragged down.”
It wasn’t harsh—it was honest. Because at the end of the day, we’re not God. We’re just His vessels. In fact, one day the Holy Spirit humbled me so directly that it still makes me laugh: “You ain’t God, dawg.” And He was right. My job isn’t to save, it’s to plant seeds and trust God to grow them (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”
1 Corinthians 3:6-7 ESV

Let’s unpack this together—with scripture, ministry lessons, and real talk from the brothers I do life with.
When Helping Starts to Hurt
Sometimes in ministry, our desire to help actually hurts—because we try to do the saving ourselves. We confuse our role with God’s.
The psalmist reminds us: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you.” (Psalm 55:22). That’s true not just for our burdens, but also for the burdens of others we try to carry.
Tip: Ask yourself, “Am I pointing them to me… or to Jesus?” If the answer is “me,” it’s time to step back.
Lessons from King Amaziah
My brother TC reminded me of a powerful moment in scripture: 2 Chronicles 25. King Amaziah got prideful, thought he could make his own alliances, and ignored God’s clear warning. The man of God told him: “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.” (2 Chronicles 25:9).
The message? God doesn’t need our schemes or our shortcuts. In fact, sometimes He has to let us fall to remind us that He alone is God.
Tip: Before you step into someone’s mess, ask God—“Is this mine to carry, or Yours?”
Preach It, Don’t Police It
Hugh Holla once shared what his pastor told him early in ministry: stop worrying about dissecting what everyone’s doing. That’s God’s job. The pastor’s job was to preach faithfully.
That lines up perfectly with scripture: “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:7).
Tip: Your calling is obedience, not control. Focus on preaching, teaching, and loving well—God will handle the heart work.
A Hard Lesson on Forgiveness and Getting Out of the Way
Not too long ago, I had a heart-to-heart with my pastor, Rev. Eddie C Richardson. We were talking about how I have this bad habit of letting people think they’re taking advantage of me. The truth is, it wasn’t really about them—it was about me. I hadn’t fully forgiven myself for who I used to be, so I kept trying to “make up for it” by overhelping.
That hit hard. Because it reminded me: when we don’t live in the freedom of Christ’s forgiveness, we start operating from guilt instead of grace. We end up getting in God’s way, trying to do His job because deep down, we still don’t feel worthy.
But scripture makes it clear: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Rev. Eddie helped me see that sometimes the best way to love others is to step aside, get out of God’s way, and stop trying to prove myself. When I rest in the forgiveness I’ve received, I don’t have to let old guilt drive me anymore.
Tip: Don’t let your past dictate your present ministry. Forgive yourself because Jesus already has.
The Real Answer Isn’t Hustle—It’s Jesus
Josef said something that hit home. When we’re counseling or ministering, it’s easy to slip into “life coach” mode—telling people to get a résumé, go to school, fill out applications, get financial stability. All of that has its place. But it’s not salvation.
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).
Josef put it like this: “It’s not FASFA or 401(k) that saves—it’s Jesus. There’s only one name, and His name is Jesus.”
Tip: When you give practical advice, don’t stop there. Always point people back to Jesus.
Prayer: The Most Powerful Move You Can Make
Here’s where it all ties together: prayer isn’t passive—it’s powerful. When we pray, we invite God to do the heavy lifting.
James 5:16 reminds us: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Max Lucado once said, “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it… our prayers do make a difference.”
Tip: When you feel helpless in ministry, don’t push harder—pray harder.
Conclusion: Let God Be God
At the end of the day, we’re not the Savior—Jesus is. We can’t transform hearts, we can’t carry people’s faith, and we can’t force growth. But we can pray, we can sow seeds, and we can trust the One who brings the increase.
So when you’re tempted to fix everything, remember this: Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is pray for them and let God do for them what you can’t.
Because when we step back, God steps in. And when He moves, lives are changed forever.
Reflection Questions
Do you sometimes carry the weight of someone else’s faith journey? How can you release that to God in prayer?
Think about King Amaziah’s story (2 Chronicles 25). Where might you be relying on your own plans instead of God’s?
Are you trying to “police” people’s faith instead of faithfully preaching, loving, and pointing them to Jesus?
How has your past shaped the way you serve today? Have you truly forgiven yourself the way Christ already has?
Who in your life needs less of your fixing and more of your prayers right now?
